San Diego

Seals, sailboats, sunshine. San Diego is a surround sound of sand and eucalyptus, of fresh fish and fresher tortillas. The city is a joy and the neighborhoods are full of gluten free delights.

If you ask someone from outside the PNW, Seattle is rain. That is the most minor of things. Seattle is evergreen and cherry blossoms, is fresh coffee beans and slick bike tires, is salt and sea. The sea is wilder, colder, and somehow wetter.

As for the gluten free food? It’s arguably the best on the West Coast.

Gluten free disclaimer: I have Celiacs. I’ve been eating strictly gluten free for 9 years and am fairly sensitive to exposures. I’ve eaten at all restaurants here, many of them regularly. However, most of them do have gluten-containing items on their menus and in their kitchens. I personally always ask for clean pans, fresh pots of water, etc, and stay away from anything with a shared fryer or grill. If you also have Celiacs or a severe wheat allergy, please talk to your server so they can take any necessary precautions or let you know if they don’t feel comfortable serving you safely that day. There are a number of fully GF restaurants as well as some additional above-and-beyond allergen-friendly spots on this list. They’re indicated with “100% GF” or “Allergen Friendly” respectively. If you or your loved one can’t risk any exposure, I recommend sticking to those.
